Repost: Smoking Triggers?
I do not agree with all Houston has to say, but at the end of the day it is true - smoking does not happen by accident. It is a decision made by us to go through a process to light up. This quit was different for me in that I made the decision that I would not smoke no matter what - I have kept to that choice even in times of stress, upset and boredom for 6637 days. I plan on continuing to keep myself free, unenslaved and smoke free.

Smoking Triggers?
From allsfair on 12/30/2013 3:23:57 PM
Definitions are important. Therefore let's start with the definition of trigger:
trig•ger n.
1. a small projecting tongue in a firearm that, when pressed by the finger, actuates the mechanism that discharges the weapon.
2. a device, as a lever, the pulling or pressing of which releases a detent or spring.
3. anything, as an act or event, that initiates or precipitates a reaction or series of reactions.
v.t.
4. to initiate or precipitate (a reaction, process, or chain of events).
5. to fire or explode (a gun, missile, etc.) by pulling a trigger or releasing a triggering device.
v.i.
6. to release a trigger.
7. to become active; activate.
I don't see anything in here about "smoking."
Look folks, there really is no such thing as a "smoking trigger." If there were such a thing every time it happened everyone would smoke. There's no such thing as a smoking trigger for a non-smoker. The only possible definition applied from above is "an act or event that initiates or precipitates a reaction or series of reactions."
Smoking is an intervening and a decided upon independent action. You have to buy a pack of cigarettes, open the pack, take out the cigarette, put it in your mouth intending to smoke it, find the lighting device, light it, light the cigarette and then smoke it. Nothing "causes you" to smoke.
Given all of the above it would truly appear that the only smoking trigger is you.
Your inner addict is a liar and wants to kill you. Therefore your inner addict will give you all kinds of ridiculous excuses why you should, need to or deserve to smoke. This is not a smoking trigger. This is addiction. Once you treat your addiction, you'll learn that there's no such thing as a smoking trigger.
If you stay strong and committed to being a non-smoker nothing can make you smoke. Many people have a lot of stress, life events, holidays, family problems, money problems, health problems and all manner of other problems and they don't have to smoke "because of them."
Neither do you.
Don't smoke even if your ass falls off.

Weather let me check. Be right back.
Well it's 64° at this moment. The low is expected to be about 59°. Skies are cloudy. Once the sun rises we will rapidly warm into the 80's. The skies will remain mostly cloudy (I prefer partly sunny) and the humidity will come in around 70%. This is an ok day! No rain.

Coping Statements for dealing with Craves - RP
From Justin75 on 5/14/2009 12:23:21 AM
I don't have to make myself crave about anything, or put myself down if I stupidly and foolishly do make myself crave.
My crave is bad, but I'm not bad.
I don't always have to feel comfortable, and it isn't awful when I don't.
I can bear-and bear with a crave: it won't kill me.
It is not necessary to be in perfect control of my crave moments. To demand that I be in control only multiplies my symptoms.
Others are not required to treat me with kid gloves when I feel uncomfortable.
The world doesn't have to make it easy for me to get a handle on my craves.
A crave is a part of life; it is not bigger than life.
My over-reactive nervous system is a part of my life, but it's not bigger than life.
I can take my crave with me when going places and doing things that I am reluctant to do (or stay isolated).
Controlling my craves is important, but hardly urgent.
Comfort is nice, but not necessary.
I don't have to be the one person in the universe to feel comfortable all the time.
I'd better not feel calm, relaxed, and serene all the time, because if I did, I'd have one dickens of a time motivating myself
Crave and panic are burrs in my saddle: highly inconvenient and uncomfortable, but hardly awful.
I don't have to hassle myself or put myself down for not coping better with my craves.
This, too, will pass.
I can blend in with the flow of my craves; I don't have to go tooth-and-nail, head-on with it.
If I feel crave, I feel crave-tough!
I may have my crave, but I am not my crave.
I don't have to shame or demean myself for anything-including creating tight knots in my gut.
Feelings of awkwardness, nervousness, or queasiness may interfere with my projects, but they do not have to ruin them.
N.O.P.E.
